Just Breathe: A Simple Exercise That Lowers Heart Rate and Boosts Recovery After Heart Attack
Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) restores blood flow after acute coronary events, but the work of recovery extends far beyond the cath lab. Anxiety, elevated blood pressure, and disrupted autonomic balance often persist for weeks. Could something as simple as slow breathing make a meaningful difference?
Between October 2023 and November 2024, researchers in Türkiye conducted a randomized controlled trial in 67 patients admitted to a cardiology inpatient clinic after primary PCI. Participants were randomly allocated to a slow breathing intervention (n = 34) or control (n = 33). The intervention group practised slow breathing for 10 minutes twice daily over an 8-week home follow-up period, while both groups self-monitored heart rate and blood pressure.
Quality of life was assessed using the MacNew Heart Disease Health-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire at discharge and at 4 and 8 weeks post-discharge. At every follow-up, MacNew scores were significantly higher in the intervention group. Just as strikingly, antihypertensive medication doses needed to be increased significantly more often in the control group — suggesting the simple breathing protocol had genuine physiological staying power.
The MacNew made it possible to detect not just clinical change, but the subjective improvement that matters to patients: feeling calmer, more capable, and more in control of recovery. Studies like this highlight why the MacNew remains a cornerstone tool for evaluating low-cost, accessible interventions in everyday cardiology practice.
